The Father's Heart

Made Alive By Love! (2)

The Power of a Choice

“The love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
(Rom 5:5).

About a week ago, my dad came into town to receive medical attention because he had been experiencing some troubling symptoms. After a series of tests, he was deeply disappointed by the diagnosis he received. He felt the doctors had not looked carefully enough and were not treating his case with the seriousness it required. For the first time in many years of receiving medical care, he found it difficult to accept their report.

As I reflected on that, I was reminded of how powerful it is to choose what report you will believe, what voice you will follow, and how you will respond when something in front of you stirs disappointment, fear, or unrest.

Saul, the first king of Israel, is a sobering example of this. He began well. He was chosen, appointed, and positioned to lead God’s people. But when David defeated Goliath and the women celebrated with songs that honored David’s victory, Saul took offense. Instead of humbling himself and rejoicing with this young lieutenant, he chose jealousy. Instead of trusting God, he chose fear and suspicion. And instead of leading the nation faithfully, he allowed insecurity to rule his heart. That one decision began to shape the rest of his life.

Saul became consumed with protecting his position rather than fulfilling his purpose. He lost focus, peace, and compassion. His calling as king was gradually overshadowed by fear and obsession. What should have been a fruitful reign became a troubled one, not because God had failed him, but because Saul kept yielding to the wrong choices within.

This is a serious reminder for all of us. The gift of choice is one of the most powerful gifts our Creator has given us. Every day, we choose what to say, how to respond, what voices to trust, what attitudes to entertain, and what path to follow. We choose whether to walk in love or offense, humility or pride, faith or fear. These choices may seem small in the moment, but they shape the direction and quality of our lives.

And this gift of choice is not weakness on God's part; it is proof of His love.

God does not force obedience or manipulate us like machines. He teaches us, warns us, leads us, and gives us His Spirit, yet He still allows us to choose. That is what makes relationship possible. Love that controls is not love. God’s love is strong enough to give freedom and faithful enough to show us what is right.

He has not left us powerless in this. Through Christ, we have been made alive. Through the Holy Spirit, His love has been poured into our hearts. That means we are not at the mercy of every emotion, impulse, or thought. We have grace to choose well. We have help to think clearly, judge rightly, and walk in the way that honors God.

Today, remember this: your choices matter. And by the life of Christ in you, you can choose what leads to peace, wisdom, purpose, and life.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for the gift of choice and for the love with which You lead me. Thank You that through Christ I have been made alive and through Your Spirit I have the grace to choose wisely. Help me to reject fear, pride, jealousy, and unbelief. Teach me to walk in love, humility, and sound judgment, so that my life will reflect Your heart and fulfill Your purpose. In Jesus’ name, amen.
