The Holy Bible

The big strategy

By Patrick Anyanwu

”The next day, the firstborn said to the younger, ‘Behold, I lay last night with my father. Let us make him drink wine tonight also. Then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve offspring from our father.’ So they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. Thus both the daughters of Lot became pregnant by their father" ‭‭(Gen‭19‬:‭34‬-‭36‬ ).

I want to start this series with a story from my 30 days of listening to the Bible challenge. Lot's daughters said, “That we may preserve offspring for our father”(v 32). That was their reason for committing that abominable act  with their father.

Big lesson for me: Their reason to preserve a lineage was not only the naturally maternal thing to do, it was a good thing too. They did not sound like perverts who simply wanted to sleep with their dad for the sake of it.  After the stated instance, we are  not told  that they did it again. Preservation is always a good thing. Right? However, in this case, it was awfully wrong. Good intent, but a bad strategy.

In John 12:49, our Lord Jesus said that He receives from the father WHAT to say and HOW to say it. Same applies to what to do and how to do it. There is no end to what to do. Excellent intentions. However, how they are executed is also critical.

Ecclesiastes 10:1 says, ”As dead flies cause even a bottle of perfume to stink, so a little foolishness spoils great wisdom and honor.“ Dead flies, terrible smell.  Without proper guidance, it is possible to take great ideas and turn them into foul-smelling, abominable monsters.

Prayer: Father, help me to put my trust in you; help me to know what needs to be done and how. By the power of your Spirit, help me to keep my heart in check so that I do not come up with ideas that, while they may look right, end up being abhorrent because of my selfish desires in Jesus name.
